Into the Waste
63The dead land so endless,
Its burnt earth must seethe
As on it the jagged
Mountains teeth
Furrows raw like pain
Rake through the ashes
Settled to wait till
The earth its teeth gnashes
An occupant alone
The boy watches the sky
Sees the ash falling,
“Today will I die?”
Alone for the span
His memory stretches
He’s sunk below the
World’s lowest wretches.
Scavenge through bones
And just survive
Was the mantra
The way to thrive.
Child of no one and
Lover of none,
He fought his own course
‘Neath the world’s dying sun.
Lost in his thoughts,
He felt the world heave.
Idly the thought crawled,
“Perhaps I should leave.”
But where would he go
In this world grown so bare
There was nowhere to go
Where better he’d fare.
